A few decades

I distinctly remember, at the age of ten,
creating a detailed description of large red ballons,
lining the shiny makeup counters of a Macy’s
the same way palm trees run down the streets of LA.

I was always writing in my head,
even though then,
I thought I was writing small chapters of a book,
but now I know it’s always been poetry.
